2017-10-19 Board Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Rich Lopez. Present were board members Paul Garabedian, Bobby Vrba, and Rick Geesaman. Boyd Brown could not attend the meeting, and was excused. Chief Chris Finn also attended the meeting. Gretchen Diefenderfer also joined the meeting, and once again brought yummy cookies. Motion was made to accept the minutes of August meeting; motion was unanimously passed. Note that the September meeting did not occur due to a lack of a quorum.

Chris Finn presented the Chief’s Report. There have been a number of relatively insignificant calls over the last few months, including campfires during the fire ban, smoky sweat lodges, and some power lines sparking in contact with trees. There was one vehicular accident near the 11 mile marker with one minor injury. There was also a report of a domestic dispute on forest service land west of town, but the people could not be found.
We next discussed the potential trial regarding the double fatality accident which occurred west of town that was dealt with by a number of our first responders. These personnel have been subpoenaed, and as a result the fires department has incurred some legal expenses. Chris Finn recommended we search for a source of funds to compensate the department for these expenses, as such expenses are out of the ordinary, and occurred in land that was not technically in the fire district.

Chris Finn presented a proposed budget for 2018. The only out of the ordinary, major proposed expense was for the installation of the cisterns in the Town Meadow. We will vote on the budget in the November meeting.

Chris Finn noted that there had been a well-attended first aid training that all considered quite useful. Approximately 10 firefighters attended the training.

We had a quick review of the Meadow Cistern project. We have received a bill for the engineering work being conducted by Scott Cox and Associates, even though most of the work has yet to be started. Chris Finn has pushed to get this invoice paid prior to the end of 2017 so it could be drawn out of the current budget. The only work to date has been on the survey of the project area, and this survey is near completion.

Bobby Vrba indicated he had been in contact with personnel associated with the mill on Horsfal. They are open to discussion about providing a source of water for use by the fire department. The board is open to the concept, and had decided to push for a preliminary meeting with Mark Steen.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:55 PM. Next meeting with be November 16th, 2017 at 7:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Rick Geesaman
